What Research and Development Roles Involve

A career in R&D with us means you’ll work on products people rely on every day, ensuring they’re the best they can be. Depending on your role, you might find yourself working on:

  • Product & Package Development and Improvement
From developing brand-new formulas, product design, and packaging to enhancing existing ones, you’ll respond to consumer trends, health guidelines, and market demands. This includes everything from early-stage formulation development and prototyping to reformulating/redesigning for better performance, shelf life, or environmental impact.
  • Process Development and Optimization
Designing more efficient manufacturing processes, implementing new technologies, and exploring cost-effective ways to boost efficiency, without compromising on quality.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance
Ensuring everything we create meets global safety, quality, and regulatory standards. This includes working with quality control teams to set specs and design testing protocols.
  • Sustainability Initiatives
Driving positive change through eco-conscious design. This includes developing recyclable or reduced-waste packaging, sourcing sustainable ingredients, and cutting energy or water use in production.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
Working closely with teams across the business, from supply chain and procurement to marketing and consumer insights.
  • Consumer Centricity
Partnering with insights teams to test products with real consumers to help keep consumers at the heart of what we do. Their feedback helps shape everything from product performance to packaging design, ensuring our research and development roles stay grounded in real-world needs.

Our Ideal Candidates for Research and Development Roles

  • Creative problem solvers - Innovative thinkers who develop and/or help execute fresh product ideas and tackle formulation or production challenges with practical, effective solutions.
  • Technical, inquisitive, and driven by continuous improvement - Resourceful self-starters who are flexible and quick to adapt to changing consumer demands, regulations, and technologies, motivated to push boundaries and make a real difference.
  • Detail-oriented collaborators - Balance precision in documentation, testing, and compliance with strong communication skills to work effectively with marketing, production, procurement, and external partners.
  • Consumer and market-aware innovators - Deep understanding of the competitive landscape and consumer behavior to ensure that new products meet technical standards and reflect customer needs.
  • Educational Background - Depending on the product category, a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology, food science, or related fields is typically required.

What Does a Day in the Life in an R&D Role Look Like?

No two days look the same, but what they do have in common is a balance of hands-on lab work with collaboration and project management. Here are a few areas you’ll typically cover in your day.

  • Prioritization & Planning
The day often starts by reviewing emails and project updates. Updating timelines and task lists to ensure projects are progressing smoothly and checking on lab test or pilot batch results to identify any immediate actions needed.
  • Laboratory & Product Development Work
Much of the day is spent formulating or adjusting product prototypes, running lab or pilot-scale trials, recording data, and troubleshooting any issues that arise to refine the products.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
Participating in meetings with marketing, production, and procurement teams to provide updates and discuss consumer feedback, market trends, or opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Data Analysis & Documentation
Analyze trial and production data, prepare detailed reports and presentations, and ensure all documentation complies with strict regulatory standards.
  • Factory or Production Line Visits
Visit production lines to oversee trials or resolve any manufacturing issues, working closely with production and quality assurance teams to maintain product integrity.
  • Follow-Up & Planning
The day often ends by finalizing test reports and internal briefs, coordinating with suppliers or external partners, and planning the next round of lab work or pilot trials.

In Research and Development, there’s no such thing as a standard day — projects evolve, priorities shift, and new discoveries can change your focus in an instant. Instead of following a set routine, your work moves between high-energy experimentation, in-depth analysis, and collaborative problem-solving.

Some days you might be deep in the lab, testing prototypes and troubleshooting results. On others, you could be working alongside cross-functional teams to translate consumer insights into practical product changes, visiting production sites to oversee technical trials, or analysing complex data to guide next steps.

You’ll also engage with suppliers, external partners, and regulatory experts to align technical requirements and ensure products meet the highest safety, quality, and compliance standards. This variety means every project is an opportunity to apply your skills in new ways, while contributing to innovations that make a real impact on people’s everyday lives
