What are maintenance technicians’ responsibilities and duties? 

In large plants, the job of a maintenance technician can be specialized, focusing on instrumentation, facilities, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical systems. In smaller plants, they might take on a more general role. 

Maintenance technicians often work in shifts and may be required to provide ‘on-call’ support, depending on the specifics of the job. They usually work as part of a maintenance team within the facility. 

Essential Functions: 

• Responsible at all times for promoting a safety culture and awareness within their area.  
• Support and adhere to all plant safety policies and procedures at all times. 
• Perform troubleshooting, facility, equipment, and production line repairs, shop fabrication, pipe fitting (PVC and stainless), and machine set-up in support of high-speed production lines.

What skills are needed for marketing in 2023 (and beyond)? 

For a long and lucrative career promoting products and services, there are really two kinds of marketing skills you should be looking to acquire. One is ‘soft’ skills, which are general competencies that can help you do many different kinds of jobs, and can underpin the more measurable ‘harder’ skills. The ‘hard’ skills themselves are things you can study and, in many cases, gain a professional certification in. 

For ease, we’ve listed five of the most common soft and hard marketing skills we think you’ll need below. 

‘Soft’ marketing skills

• Attention to detail: It’s often the small details that can make or break a marketing campaign. A comma in the wrong place, a simple spelling mistake, the wrong headline in a presentation or a missed decimal point in a financial promotion can be the difference between outstanding success, looking foolish to colleagues and clients, or even huge financial losses.  

• Creativity: Another of the essential soft skills needed for marketing is the ability to think different. Take Steve Jobs, for instance. He was a marketing guy who had the vision to realize how Apple could develop into new areas with music and phones – and the creativity to guide artists, writers, designers and tech-minded workers to an incredibly successful outcome across product, media ads, and more besides. Our advice? Speak up with your creative ideas in meetings early, work with your creative team closely on ideas, and let as much of their process seep in to your own thinking as humanly possible – you’ll be glad you did later on. 

• A growth mindset: If you want to go from marketing assistant to marketing manager, you have to be focused on growing. That doesn’t just mean climbing the career ladder at work, it means applying yourself to accreditations in your spare time and learning new technologies and tools that can help to push your company and industry forward.  

• Communication: A marketing department may have its own dedicated copywriters, but even in a non-creative marketing role you’ll have to do plenty of communicating to help bring projects to life. From emails to written briefs and hosting meetings to giving presentations, communication is one of the most crucial soft marketing skills you can cultivate, and ultimately comes with practice the more you do it. 

• Leadership: For a long and successful marketing career you’ll also need to grow your leadership abilities. That may seem daunting and not all that relevant when you’re a marketing assistant, but as you gain experience and seniority people in your team and others, as well as clients and agencies you partner with, will all look to you for direction. It’s therefore always wise to be a sponge in your first few years, soaking in as much experience and getting as much advice from more experienced marketers than you. Adding an accredited management course or two to your CV definitely doesn’t hurt, either.  

‘Hard’ marketing skills 

• Strategic thinking: One of the first ‘hard’ marketing skills you’ll need for a truly successful career in marketing is the ability to identify and take advantage of strategic opportunities. For instance, if you have a particular product to sell, the strategic part might be in selecting the right audience to target and identifying the most effective channels to get your message across in a compelling fashion. The ability to implement a strategy and business development plan can come with experience, but taking a course like a Masters in Strategic Marketing could be of enormous benefit.  

• Social media and email marketing management: Two of the pillars of digital marketing campaigns, social and email communications allow brands to build strong bonds with a captive audience who are, by and large, already subscribed to receive their content. As a marketer you may work with writers and designers on the content or you may create your own, but either way you’ll want to make use of industry standard social management tools and email campaign management services like MailChimp. 

• Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC): Another crucial skill for a successful marketing career, SEO is what allows your content and campaigns to show up in search results, effectively making sure your products and services find success through maximizing their online visibility. SEO can be organic (getting found in search results without paying for it), paid (where you run Pay Per Click digital ad campaigns that target specific demographics and search terms), and you can even target people in specific locations like those local to you. There are any number of ways to learn this, so our advice would be to spend some time in the Google Analytics dashboard, read a lot, and take any and every course that you find helpful.

What does a packaging engineer do? 

Packaging engineering jobs are wide and varied. 

Primarily, packaging engineers design, develop and produce packaging that allows their client to ship a product attractively, securely, safely, and just as importantly, at an acceptable cost. The role can focus on primary packaging, like outer boxes and slip cases, or the more functional secondary packaging, which is the inner boxes, slip cases and safety insulation/padding that prevent products and produce from getting damaged during delivery. 

However, because of the specialized nature of their skill set, packaging engineers are also sometimes asked to get involved with developing machinery or modify existing packaging systems in order to make the end-to-end packaging process more efficient.

It’s also quite possible that a company might ask a packaging engineer to get involved with package testing. This can help them see if there are discrepancies between initial design and the final packaging solution, and give their feedback in order to iron out any unforeseen flaws.

A high level of mathematics ability and scientific understanding 

Being an engineering position that sits under the umbrella of R&D, a packaging engineer job requires a high level of competency with both mathematics and science. This foundation gives the engineer a good grounding in the specifics needed to create precise measurements while still factoring in the safety, security and cost effectiveness of the solutions they create – not an easy balancing act to achieve. 

Packaging design  

Packaging design needs to be both pragmatically considered and aesthetically pleasing. A packaging engineer will research both current standards and the company’s own packaging history and aim to create packaging that is both functional and beautiful, while remaining on brand and attractive to prospective customers. 

Computer Aided Design (CAD) 

While packaging design is quite a general skill, CAD is where it becomes specific. Using specialized software, a packaging engineer will create detailed 2D drawings and/or 3D models of the packaging to the exact millimeter, allowing them to improve the quality of detail before exporting the finished model into the manufacturing process. 

Project management 

As key players in the packaging design process, packaging engineers will often lead their work from the front and take on project management duties. This can mean leading teams, reporting to higher management, and even giving training on the considerations and success metrics required to bring a product to market from a packaging perspective. 

Logistics and cost management 

Packaging engineers often have to think about the cost impact of their designs on the business from a logistical perspective. For instance, an especially complex design may necessitate many packaging folds on the assembly line, including the intervention of manual checking, which can drastically slow down production and contribute to increased costs. Get a good education in relevant fields 

Due to the role’s technical nature, most packaging engineers begin by finishing high school and getting a bachelor’s degree. That can mean a specific packaging engineering degree, or one in machanical engineering. These will also encompass subjects like chemistry, math and material science, ensuring you get a good grounding in everything you need to understand the challenges of modern packaging and can take the lead in finding solutions. 

Gain related, real-world packaging design experience

Start your package engineering journey in a junior role

There are many different types of skilled trade jobs. Below, we’ve picked five general roles that are relevant to our business here at Church & Dwight, giving you a glimpse into how technicians help us produce the products behind our world-renowned brands. 

Manufacturing technician 

A manufacturing technician’s primary responsibility is to operate manufacturing equipment and ensure it’s optimized to run as efficiently as possible. They also inspect and test finished products for flaws. Additionally, they report machinery breakdowns in a timely fashion, perform minor repairs, and keep maintenance logs of any machinery they need to fix during their shift – all while ensuring the work area is kept neat and in line with company safety protocols. An experienced manufacturing technician may also train in skills needed for other production positions and even help teach newer technicians the vagaries of the role. 

Compounding technician or mechanic 

Compounding technicians are responsible for ensuring potentially hazardous chemicals are mixed and blended in the right amounts in order to produce specific items like medicines, toiletries, cleaning products and more besides. The role can frequently be found in the pharmaceutical world, but in manufacturing is often labelled as a compounding mechanic. Whichever label you give the role, a compounding technician/mechanic will also often need to take delivery of chemicals and ensure correct documentation is filled and filed, along with overseeing safe measures for moving and storing the material in compliance with industry safety standards. 

Maintenance technician

A maintenance technician keeps a manufacturing space running by servicing and maintaining the production equipment that the factory or distribution center needs to run smoothly and efficiently and meet its quotas. Maintenance technicians will also regularly inspect and assess the functionality of production machines, troubleshoot mechanical breakdowns, and make adjustments to mechanical parts using hand and machine tools. Electrician  

Electricians at Church & Dwight are responsible for troubleshooting, training, repairing and maintaining electrical and PLC components of production lines, facilities, equipment, power systems, and more in our fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing and distribution facilities. As such, electricians are essential in finding the root cause of power outages, assessing, solving and keeping downtimes to the absolute minimum – thus ensuring our sites stay as productive as possible.  

Industrial mechanic 

Industrial mechanics (otherwise known as maintenance mechanics) regularly inspect, diagnose problems and fix equipment in factories, distribution centers and other large-scale industrial facilities. They play a vital role ensure a company's manufacturing, processing and other logistical functions remain productive and work as efficiently as possible. While that might sound very similar on the surface to a maintenance technician, in reality there are some distinct differences. Maintenance technicians are generally adept at maintaining certain systems and addressing specific problems, while an industrial mechanic is able to diagnose and fix a far wider array of issues – often in a shorter time period owing to their more specialized knowledge.

Earn a relevant degree 

While there is no one degree-level course in brand management, there are a number of different bachelors courses that can offer an effective ‘in’ to the profession. While the first obvious port of call for many professions is earning a college degree, that’s not necessarily the case for budding social media specialists. Admittedly you can learn much of what’s needed on a modern marketing degree, but you can also go the route of teaching yourself using a variety of online resources. There are plenty of blogs, YouTube channels and podcasts out there that are dedicated to teaching people how to level up their social media game, and many social media management tools are free to download and master at your own pace – including Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and many more.

Create your own social media content and measure its effectiveness 

Building a portfolio is essential to breaking into a role that has a creative component, and that’s just what you should be doing as an aspiring social media specialist. First take time to understand your audience, then devise social marketing strategies, create social marketing communications, measure your campaign’s effectiveness, alter your approach to improve your results, and present your biggest successes in an online portfolio that you can speak to during interviews. Land an entry-level digital marketing role 

With the requisite skills and experience in the bag and a portfolio to be proud of, you’ll be well placed to be taken seriously for a junior digital marketing role. What exactly is digital marketing? 

Digital marketing involves a company promoting its products and services using all digital channels available to it. Often this means placing promotions on web pages, creating content related to those offerings, and circulating that content widely using email, text messaging, Google Ads and paid or organic social media. 

Digital marketers work as part of a wider marketing team to understand their audience, segment them into personas, and develop effective creative marketing strategies to catch the attention of those groups in different ways, driving subscriptions and sales in the process. Marketers are also responsible for tracking the success of these campaigns using data from tools like Google Analytics and using it to optimize income along with less obvious metrics like brand reach and brand awareness.

What core skills do you need to be a warehouse worker? 

While each of the warehouse roles below has their own unique demands, there are some key universal skills that will stand you in good stead in this fast-paced world, regardless of which particular position you’re looking to land. These include: 

• Being physically healthy will allow you to handle the hard labor and long hours of bring on your feet present in most warehouse jobs. 

• A good level of literacy, numeracy and IT ability will enable you to follow written instructions, count stock and enter data into warehouse systems.

These are eight of the most common warehouse worker jobs you will find in North America. 

1. Warehouse Worker

The warehouse worker will do everything from receiving and processing raw materials to loading and shipping orders and managing stock levels. Warehouse worker jobs can also cover packing boxes, placing orders and even ferrying stock to vendors. A true generalist, the warehouse worker is a jack of all trades and an excellent role for any hard working individual who wants to get a good grounding in the fundamentals of warehouse operations.  

2. Warehouse Operator

A warehouse operator is responsible for moving goods both in and out of the warehouse. That means preparing deliveries of outgoing stock, reviewing incoming orders, driving forklifts and even operating the order picking machines that allow for retrieval of stock in high up places. Warehouse operator jobs usually don’t require formal qualifications, but this is rarely an entry-level role, with some previous roles in a warehouse and experience with heavy machinery both seen as a distinct advantage. 

3. Warehouse Supervisor

The warehouse supervisor is responsible for managing employees across all aspects of a warehouse’s operations. That includes overseeing safety, quality control and customer service, alongside scheduling daily shift activities to ensure the warehouse is fully stocked for effective operations around the clock.  Warehouse supervisors are also a crucial link between the warehouse and management, meaning they need to be skilled communicators able to manage both downwards and upwards. 

4. Warehouse Driver

A warehouse driver takes stock from the warehouse and delivers it directly to customers. As part of this process they will work with the warehousing team to ensure speedy turnaround of trailers. They may also be called upon to ensure correct maintenance of equipment, and to get involved with stock taking within the warehouse. Warehouse drivers at Church & Dwight are required to have both a valid driving and class 1 HGV license, and ideal candidates will also have a valid MHE license for all equipment along with a valid Counterbalance and VNA forklift truck license.  

5. Warehouse Forklift Operator

Warehouse forklift operator jobs are one of the most specialized roles within a distribution center. Responsible for moving often heavy goods around a facility, forklift drivers need to be certified to operate a forklift and have the special awareness and driving skill to do so safely, while staying fully in line with company safety policies. The forklift driver’s responsibilities may also extend to loading and unloading deliveries at the loading dock, meaning they’ll need to exhibit excellent communication skills when working effectively with the warehouse driver role.

6. Warehouse Manager

A warehouse manager is vital to the successful running warehouse operations. This role is responsible for coordinating daily activities on a warehouse’s production floor, including inbound receiving, shipping, inventory control, and communicating with the sales and supply chain teams to resolve any time delivery issues. A warehouse manager balances and assigns resources to where they’re needed most, while also taking responsibility for enforcing the company’s safety policies. At Chuch & Dwight, our warehouse managers also work with their supervisors to facilitate audit and lease compliance, capital projects, safety systems light heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and may even get involved in contractual negotiations over costs of supplies and warehouse equipment. 

7. Material Handler

Material handlers are primarily responsible for overseeing the movement of materials (even potentially hazardous ones) around a warehouse. That could mean placing items into storage or getting items moved from storage areas to an area where they can be packed and prepped for delivery. Material handers may also check items for damage before accepting orders or sending them for delivery. A material handler is an essential warehouse worker job with a high level of organizational skill and a focus on safety at all times. 

8. Warehouse Systems Analyst

We’re cheating a little with our last warehouse worker job because it’s not an in-warehouse role at all. However, we’ve included the warehouse system analyst role because it shows how a warehouse can connect to roles at the corporate level, and how specialist warehouse knowledge can be combined with technical expertise to ensure operations run smoothly and effectively. The warehouse systems analyst role at Church & Dwight is a technical one that focuses on successful implementation, upgrades, and daily support of our warehouse management system. While able to operate remotely, the position does require some travel to our sites and engaging in all aspects of our warehouse system solutions.

However, the position is especially important in the efficient running of businesses that have a manufacturing focus. 

 In this post we’ll explore the benefits of effective operations management in manufacturing (commonly referred to as manufacturing operations management, or MOM for short), the various areas of a business that a dedicated manufacturing operations manager can be responsible for, and the ways in which they might work to optimize a company’s manufacturing operations. 

Manufacturing operations management: the benefits

 Processes 

A manufacturing operations manager is often responsible for optimizing a business’s end-to-end processes to ensure they’re working as efficiently as possible in-line with given budgets. 

For example, they could take a deep look into the company’s current supply chain process with a view to creating efficiencies, such as using data to refine the process of receiving, storing and retrieving raw materials that are essential to the manufacturing process. They might also incept the rollout of technologies that trigger an alert when specific materials stock levels run high or low, allowing the business to stay automatically on top of stock levels of important materials and avoid both storage bottlenecks and manufacturing drop-offs and ensuring the business meets its key performance indicators (KPIs). 

Additionally, these processes may encompass project workflow between different departments and teams, establishing new technologies or working processes at the lower, mid-tier and even management levels to ensure a company’s manufacturing output is everything it can be.  

As part of this approach to processes, someone managing manufacturing operations will likely use Lean Six Sigma methodologies to help guard against wasteful use of physical resources along with wasting employees’ time, effort and talent. The benefits of this approach can also be felt across the other two aspects of operations management in manufacturing. 

People  

Another key element of managing manufacturing operations is utilizing what is often labelled a business’s most important resource: its people. This is in many ways the role’s most complex and arguably its most important challenge, as it encompasses managing: 

• Safety: Manufacturing operations managers are responsible for promoting a safety culture and awareness within a business. This includes supporting, broadcasting and enforcing safety policies and procedures fairly and consistently, as well as leading behavior-based safety initiatives across a department, or even an entire company.   

• Recruitment, training and development: Effective manufacturing operations management also encompasses identifying skills gaps within a team and aiming to fill them. This can happen by recruiting new hires, or by training and developing existing employees to ensure their career trajectory aligns with their employer’s needs for the role. This can mean operations managers partner with HR managers to outline a role’s career path, incept training and performance manage employees, as well as getting involved in the interviewing and wider hiring process. 

• Wellbeing: An essential part of maximizing employee productivity in the modern working world is ensuring the company creates a professional environment that’s conducive to positive mental health and supportive of employee’s physical wellbeing. With manufacturing being a physically intensive and deadline-led industry, that responsibility often falls on the shoulders of the manufacturing operations manager, who may approach this as part of their employee development strategy, as well as working with HR teams to establish the most supportive policies and employee benefits packages.  

Production 

The final area of a manufacturing operations manager’s core responsibilities lies in the physical means of production. This could involve deciding on a suitable location for a manufacturing site, the nature of the facilities required, and what kind of machinery and software the plant will need in order to operate to maximum efficiency. 

 Once a plant is up and running, managing manufacturing operations in an ongoing fashion then means staying up to date on developing technologies and making important decisions around when to upgrade hardware, or either change up or expand the manufacturing space to accommodate production of new commercial product lines as the business adapts to an ever-changing market. 

 Naturally, any additions or changes to a production space will also impact the people involved, and could require new policies, working processes, additional headcount, further training, or supporting facilities. All of these will be considerations that the manufacturing operations manager will have to weigh up before bringing a detailed, budgeted proposal to senior management.

In this blog series, we interviewed key players in our business to uncover what they do, where they operate and why they enjoy coming to work every day. Each of these employees adds tremendous value to Church & Dwight. 

Today we spoke with Sarah L., Senior Manager of Packaging Engineering in our Princeton, NJ plant. 

Sarah joined us in 2007 as a Research Packaging Engineer and since then has worked her way up through the ranks, gaining increased responsibility and doing work that touches almost every one of our brands. However, there’s so much more to Sarah’s background – and, equally, she insists, so much more to life at Church & Dwight.  

Much more than meets the eye 

The owner of a Materials Science degree (as well as an EMT certificate from her days as volunteer ambulance crew!), Sarah split the early parts of her career pre-Church & Dwight between engineering roles in product line management, processing, and manufacturing efficiencies. She then conducted materials testing in the aerospace industry, before moving onto working on precise micro dose level measurements at a pharmaceutical company. Her career later pivoted into the medical devices space, where she gained experience on manufacturing engineering and line layouts, before moving into the Sales as a Sales Engineer.  

 That extensive and impressive body of experience all coalesced some 16 years ago to make her an outstanding candidate to join our packaging team. Since then, Sarah has never looked back. 

 “I really feel like I found a home here at Church & Dwight,” she says. “That’s a big part of why I’ve been here as long as I have.” 

 Now tasked with leading a team of six, Sarah also handles project and portfolio management for a range of our businesses – a role she grew into while the company supported her successful studies for her Green and Black belt Lean Six Sigma certifications. 

 Asked what people might not realise about her role and team, she explains: “I wish people knew the breadth of what we do! There are so many considerations that go into a package design. For instance, trying to balance strength, cost, ergonomics, functionality, and machine limitations along with meeting customer and retailer requirements, all of which can vary widely,” she says.  

 "A lot of people fancy themselves packaging engineers but there’s an incredible amount to it that most people wouldn’t ever realise,” Sarah explains. “At least, until they’re lucky enough to land a role here. Then the fun really begins!” 

A welcoming place, packed with variety 

It’s perhaps not surprising that after 16 years, Sarah is a big fan of the company culture here at Church & Dwight and would recommend it to any potential new recruits. 

 “It’s definitely a welcoming environment,” she says with a smile. “People are friendly and we all work hard to get the job done – but have fun too.  I’m lucky to have a great team that is highly skilled, diverse, passionate, willing to step up when I need them to take on a new challenge, but they also make me laugh and encourage and help one another.” 

 In terms of her team’s day to day, in just a few moments Sarah makes it clear just how wide and varied their responsibilities are, and how many other teams they interact with on a daily and weekly basis to be successful. 

 "We are very collaborative with so many cross-functional teams,” Sarah explains. “We work closely with Marketing to understand the business needs and learn about consumer insights. We also work very closely with our vendors to ensure components have the right dimensions, tolerances, fit and all run smoothly. And We work closely with Operations and attend line trials to make sure our customers will be delighted with our products.” 

 She takes a momentary pause for breath, then continues… 

 "Additionally, we write the specifications on all of the packaging components, put together bills of materials and work with Product Development to get items released for sale. We also work with the Corporate Engineering team on new packaging equipment installations and with Quality on qualifications and validations,” she says with an out of breath smile. 

 “In short, we work on all types of projects!” beams Sarah. "I enjoy the variety of businesses and packaging formats I support as well as the people I work with. No two days are ever the same.” 

We succeed as a team 

 Asked about recent successes and her team’s goals, Sarah is full of enthusiasm for the present and future of her team and life at Church & Dwight. 

 “It’s been great to see Home Care grow to $1bn!”  says Sarah. “There is amazing forecasted growth in e-commerce and GMG over the next few years.  Accelerating in e-commerce is a big focus for the company and I’m excited that my team is driving in this area and that we are part of the new Digital team.” 

 Pressed to name a specific project, Sarah takes a second or two to ponder, before responding: 

 “It’s difficult to just pick one. Clump & Seal was the company’s most successful launch and required developing cartons with high barrier properties, premium metallic graphics and a new glue,” she reflects. “But from an aesthetic perspective, I’d also say Oxi Clean Dish Detergent that launched in three sizes in custom hourglass bottles that really stood out on the shelf.” 

 And what, we ask Sarah, is the key to such brilliant teamwork that helps create such incredible products? 

 “Communication is key and building up your network,”  she nods. “Not only knowing who to call to get information but also knowing what your downstream customers need – that’s so important to keep projects on schedule and running smoothly.” 

 “To any new starter, I’d say: Ask questions. Be curious. Learn from mistakes. Keep a positive attitude,” she says with her now-trademark smile. “Do all of that and I’m sure you’ll love life here – just as much as I have all these years!”

 In the simplest terms, it’s a label for the way all of a company’s different departments function together in order to make the business profitable. That can extend from corporate departments like marketing, sales, purchasing and recruitment, right the way through to the effective management of research, production, distribution and the wider supply chain. The exact nature of the operations and the main business challenges it faces depends on the kind of business it is, and the industry within which it exists. 

 Of course, such a logistical challenge creates the need for at least one role (often more in larger businesses) to take oversee and guide the business on a day-to-day basis. That’s where an operations manager comes in.

What does an operations manager do? 

An operations manager is in charge of a business’s core operations on a day-to-day basis, including ensuring that the business’s workflow processes are set to work in the most efficient fashion. 

The specifics of an operations manager’s day-to-day will depend on the company and industry they operate within. For instance, in the retail world, an operations manager may oversee the training and recruitment of staff, the ordering of new stock, the issuing of safety policies and the creation of employees’ work schedules.

An operations manager in a warehouse may take on some of those duties too, but also be responsible for quality control of products being shipped, and maintenance of equipment – for instance, fixing of manufacturing faults in warehouse distribution systems.

They may even be responsible for drawing up plans to improve their workplace’s output, including making improvements to using data to make recommendations for new technology depending on the business’s quality control challenges and the general commercial demands of an ever-changing market. 

 How to become an operations manager 

Operations management is a specific career skill and becoming an operations manager often means committing to the career path wholeheartedly and investing in your future. The earlier, the better!  

 Those that take this path will find a deeply rewarding and varied role with established career progression and many interesting challenges to solve – particularly when moving between different sectors and industries. 

These are our tips for how to become an operations manager: 

1. Get a business-related degree

Recent research shows that over 60% of operations managers have at least a bachelor’s qualification in a related field. For instance, a degree that factors in aspects of business, leadership, mathematics and management will stand you in good stead to be taken seriously by employers when it eventually comes to applying to operations manager positions.  

2. Find relevant work experience and a mentor figure

Real-world experience is key to becoming an effective operations manager. You can get this by working in different departments within a business and being exposed to different aspects of its operations, and also by learning from people with vastly more experience than yourself in that field – ideally, on the job. Customer service roles are always a great ‘in’ to any company, but you can make yourself indispensable by taking time to understand the market for the company’s services and products, and by learning how the working process flows between the business’s different departments – with a view to being able to improve those processes in the future. 

3. Earn further qualifications and certifications

An essential part of eventually becoming an experienced senior operations manager is having a growth mindset and a proactive approach to your career. That means considering taking on a master’s degree to further expand your theoretical business knowledge, and becoming accredited in things like supply chain, inventory management, people management and program management. 

4. Develop relevant competencies

Accreditations are one way to prove your qualities but day to day personal development should also never be neglected – particularly if you have a long-term career as an operations manager in mind. Whatever junior role you’re currently in, there are a number of core competencies relevant to operations management you can potentially work on while being supported by your business’s human resources team or your direct line manager.

What does an accountant do?

How do I become an accountant?  

Becoming an accountant can be a lengthy process that requires a lot of work and dedication but in the end, can be a satisfying and well-paying career. 

1. What degrees do you need to be an accountant?

 The first step to becoming an accountant is to complete a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field. Many businesses consider this degree a minimum requirement to become an accountant. However, in the United States there are different requirements depending on the specific state.  

Some states may even require extra coursework like auditing, financial reporting, or tax accounting.  

2. What accounting types are there?  

The second step is choosing an accounting career focus from one of the four principal areas: Public Accounting, Private Accounting, Internal and External Auditing, and Government Accounting.  

Public Accounting  

A public accountant offers their services to a third-party person or organization, usually as a freelancer or a sole proprietor. They can often work with many clients rather than just one.

Internal and External Auditing  

A primary objective of an internal auditor is to create efficiencies for a company or organization’s operations by reviewing its activities and removing risks. The aim of an external auditor is to ensure that a company or organization's accounting and financial records are accurate.  

Government Accounting  

When an accountant is employed in the public sector or at a government agency such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service, or the General Accounting Office, this is considered government accounting. Some of the work that a government accountant performs involves making businesses follow fiscal standards, assessing financial documentation, investigating white collar crime or financial fraud, and reviewing books to ensure that a government agency is legally compliant.  

A government accountant needs to be a qualified certified public accountant.  

3. Find an internship  

A recommended step to becoming an accountant is to take up an internship to learn skills. This will improve career prospects as employers prefer employing someone with experience. An effective way of finding an internship is by using a school’s program to contact accounting firms or businesses. Asking professors or using online resources are also effective ways of finding internship programs.  

 4. Pass the Certified Public Accountant exam.  

 The last step to becoming a certified public accountant is to meet the minimum requirements of a bachelor’s degree and then pass the CPA exam.  

A CPA qualified accountant will then be able to perform legal services like founding a business or filing certain reports. This expands career options and opportunities by proving that the accountant has the necessary expertise.  

It is worth noting that the career of an accountant is usually a continuous process of training and learning. This additional education allows an accountant to learn new skills and therefore progress their career. Alex joined the business full-time in 2014 after successful completion of a  Co-Op program in 2013. As part of our expanding analytics team, he ensures that we’re optimizing all our processes and keeping abreast of the technological innovations available to us.

Data is making a big impact

Going forward, that will only be more so, as Alex explains, “In this company, from even just five years ago to today, in terms of our data maturity, and our ability to use data to make impactful decisions, it’s a night and day difference. We’re really using the data to our advantage.”

Alex enjoys the fact that he gets to see the impact of his work every day; it’s palpable and measurable, and he’s able to act on the information quickly to affect positive changes.

As Alex tells us, “With my team, I helped develop a methodology for forecasting our brand sales, that we believe comes with added advantages, and is a better, more accurate methodology than we were previously employing. So that was a great project to work on, where you really see the impact, the results.”

He continues, “And that new way of using both data, and the people that we have, combined with our roll up your sleeves culture, makes for a really strong combination.”

We get the best of both worlds

You need to have a curious mindset to be in data analytics, and that includes keeping up with the latest technology. We wondered if Alex would be happier working for a major tech company. No, was the answer, loud and clear.

Alex believes this egoless and agile culture has aided his progression within the company. He’s interacted with more experienced colleagues and company leaders from the very start, as he says, “They’re approachable and always keen to share their knowledge.”

“I think it speaks to their engagement with their beliefs, and their down-to-earth attitude,” he says. “I don't think I'd have that opportunity to ask somebody like that to write a letter of recommendation at other organizations. It's not because I'm special, they would do that for anybody.”

With Alex’s managerial role in the Analytics Center of Excellence, he is now approached by senior-level executives to answer their questions. And Alex is happy to share his knowledge with them.

Making an impact by making sure of quality

As a Line Resource Operator Arminda takes her responsibilities seriously because at Church & Dwight, quality is what we demand for all our products. And with that comes pride in what we do, and how we do it.

As Arminda tells us, “My job is to make sure products get the right amount of attention. The quality of what we make has to be to the right standard, this is very important to all of us at Church & Dwight.”

Arminda has been with Church & Dwight for 18 years. Her experience is invaluable, not only in ensuring that our brands like Nair™ and Arm and Hammer Advanced White, reach the stores in perfect condition, but also ensuring new team members are fully trained to our exacting standards.

“I try to work with them as much as possible, my aim is to let them know the importance of getting the job done the right way,” says Arminda, “I know from my own experience, I started out as an operator, it can be hard work, but it’s also fun. So yes, with my experience, and being able to train new people and make sure standards are high, I’m able to make an impact.”

“I’ve been here coming up for 20 years, I wouldn’t stay if I didn’t like it,” says Arminda. “Most of us feel this way, there are lots of us who have been at Church & Dwight for a long time.”

It’s not just the pride in doing a job well done, it’s the actual products themselves that our colleagues are proud to associate themselves with. In fact, it was the products that first attracted Arminda to the company, as she tells us, “Everything the company makes is very well recognized. I’ve had people talk about what we make, one lady said a doctor recommended it for her family, and I told her it’s really good, and that I help make it!”

Arminda believes she found the right job at the right time. “When a job came up at Church & Dwight, I said to myself, I’d really like to work here. And we have a great 401k, much better than a lot of companies, so that’s good too.”

Because of the structure of the company, there’s a lot of internal mobility. This allows colleagues to apply and try for different roles in Church & Dwight. We’ve had employees start in Finance, then move into Data Science; and Operators on the floor who have become Warehouse Managers.

Because we’re a large organization with a small company feel, we work on getting to know everyone, and actively encourage employees to grow within the business. This is another reason we attract really good people to Church & Dwight because they know that once they join us, there are real opportunities to flourish and find your niche.

As Arminda says, “I've been very lucky here because I learned from some great supervisors. They took time to explain things to me, how to do things in a proper way. And I’ve carried that on.”

But Arminda doesn’t rest on her laurels, she’s always looking to improve. “I try to grow every day because every day you learn something different. And yeah, I like to learn things. It never stops.”

And we make sure the training and education available to colleagues to transition into those roles if they choose to do so. Arminda is proof of that.

We believe Arminda carries on the rich tradition of handing down her knowledge and experience to new joiners; just like she was taught by her supervisor 18 years ago.

Arminda tells us, “I feel like when we get new people, I want to train them, and I want to show them the best of what I was taught. And what I like about it the most, is that they want to learn. They want to be part of the team, the company.”

I love working with my team

Teamwork is what Church & Dwight is all about. And that’s across the board, from the executive level to the folks on the floor. Again, this fits in with the flat structure and philosophy of the way we do things.

Humility counts for a lot with us, there’s no room for egos. We all strive to work together, harmoniously, to create the best environment, best work culture and the best products possible.  

As we said, the work can be challenging, but with your team, you’re in it together. We all have each other’s backs, and we always endeavor to make the work enjoyable. For Arminda, that’s another aspect of her role she enjoys.

She tells us, “I will say working as a team together is one of the things I really like about my job. Because I love to work with the people that I’m with. We all know each other pretty well. We like getting together, talking and enjoying the work, getting the best out of each other.”

Today we spoke with Billy W., who’s one of our highly skilled production mechanics.

The opportunity to advance and make an impact

Billy has been with us for just over 8 months now, long enough to know the ropes, but also new enough to remember the process that got him here. As a production mechanic at our Colonial Heights facility, Billy, with his team, ensures that all our machinery runs perfectly. As you can imagine, that’s quite a responsibility.

As Billy tells us, “My role is to troubleshoot and repair equipment in the plant as and when necessary, to make sure that we make production and get things done.”

When you think of all the products we make at any one of our facilities, it would be hard to imagine how he and his team of production mechanics wouldn’t make an impact. Billy agrees, but adds, “My job is to work in the background, to make sure everything runs smoothly with the equipment, but the great team we have here has always done that, long before I arrived.”

But even in his short time with us, Billy has certainly made an impact with his team. “I was approached by my supervisor last week about doing the Train the Trainer Course, to learn to be a leader and teacher for future mechanics. And that makes me feel good about myself and shows that my hard work has paid off and is seen, so yes, I guess I have made an impact in the time I’ve been here.”

We believe in providing all our colleagues with the opportunity to upskill, and Billy hasn’t wasted any time in taking up the programs offered.

“Church & Dwight has been kind enough to offer the Lead Practitioner Course,” says Billy. “And anything else to help further my value to the company, as well as my own value for myself. I’m looking forward to all advancement opportunities.”

Billy’s ambitious, and that’s exactly what we like to see at Church & Dwight. And that’s one of the things that attracted him to the company, the opportunity for advancement.

“I left a job that I'd been at for 15 years because there was no further advancement,” says Billy. “I did my interview with the maintenance supervisor and the engineering supervisor here, and they were very honest and told me there were lots of opportunities for me. It’s something they were very keen to make me aware of, and I certainly appreciated it.”

As we all know, taking a new job is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make in your life; especially when coming from somewhere you’ve been for so long. And even if we do offer advancement opportunities, excellent compensation and a generous 401k, there are still other things you need to consider.

“The vibe was really good. Along with everything else I’ve spoken about, I really liked the vibe I got from everybody. Everybody was very open and honest about the company and the work involved,” says Billy. “I got a tour of the facility, I was impressed, and it all looked good. It looked like something I would enjoy doing. And I made up my mind and took the job there and then.”

I always strive to be the best value for my employer, be that working overtime, not slacking and getting the job done in a timely and thorough manner.”

Today we spoke with Mike T., Warehouse Operator in York, Pennsylvania.

Mike’s role is varied, and he applies his skills and efforts where they’re needed most. As he says, “I back up the warehouse leads when they’re out or shorthanded and help customer service check in drivers at the window. If I’m not needed there, then I’m out on the floor. It’s pretty multifaceted depending on the day.”

Mike has spent more than 12 years with the business, joining the company shortly after the warehouse opened in 2009. During his time with Church & Dwight, Mike has grown into his role and worked closely alongside people he’s now happy to call friends.

His work can have challenging moments, but it’s provided him with a stable career, opportunities to learn and a real sense of accomplishment at the end of each day.

A chance to learn and make an impact

A role as a warehouse operator can be hard work, but it teaches you how to work under pressure, roll up your and have fun with like-minded colleagues at the same time.

“I’ve been doing all kinds of different things since I started here, even out on the floor. I’ve helped wherever I can, which means I always learn something new.”

Mike’s role can be varied depending on what’s needed from him, so he keeps an open mind and remains flexible to ensure he’s always ready to help others.

“When I first started, I had to learn the system which was definitely a challenge and something totally new and different from what I’ve done before.”

When asked about the specifics of his day-to-day role as a warehouse operator, Mike says, “It’s our job to make sure the dock stays running and the queue stays full. We’re always talking to each other saying ‘we need to put this here’ or ‘put that there’.”

At Church & Dwight, we’re an energetic and passionate bunch, which means we show up to work each morning ready to tackle the day ahead. Whether Mike is out on the warehouse floor or working from the office, he takes pride in owning his area of expertise and feels he can make a tangible impact on the business.

“It’s a team effort but the warehouse is massive, so when I’m out on the floor I have to be accountable for my own actions. The palletizers have to stay together and work together to run that line and keep delivering what’s needed on time.”

Mike concludes, “Church & Dwight has definitely given me the opportunity to learn a lot of new things, especially recently being based in the office. I feel like I’m definitely making the most of it.”

“In my position, I’ve been able to bring a degree of confidence to the group in terms of some more challenging commercial discussions. Ultimately, we need to balance customer relationships and sales with profitability, which is something that requires a good level of alignment and confidence.”

“That’s the biggest thing for us to take action on – let’s try something new, learn from it and do it together. And it’s amazing when you take on a challenge together, because you build up a degree of belief and see the significant impact you can have across the people you’re working with,” notes Mark.

How can I thrive in a Sales position at Church & Dwight?

To better understand the specifics of the role, we asked Mark, “What does someone need to bring to a sales role at Church & Dwight in order to thrive and succeed?”

Mark replied, “Fundamentally, it’s about having a customer-focused outlook in your planning. You also need to leverage the opportunities we have to grow our brands and their customers. I would start with – ‘How do you know your customer?’ and ‘How do you take the great opportunities we have within our business to integrate them for success in your portfolio of customers?’”.

Unlike some businesses, our sales teams aren’t out for themselves. It’s very much a team environment where we succeed as one collective unit.

As Mark notes, “There’s definitely a team spirit, especially because we need to be aligned on pricing and promotions. These are decisions we have to make together. We encourage people to go in-store and have mentors and relationships with different colleagues and departments.”

Equally, though, Mark comments on the value of making decisions at speed, which requires a strong degree of personal accountability and self-belief.

“As a leadership team, we’re trying to encourage decision-making at speed. It’s natural for a lot of people to want to ask permission to lead, but we want our Sales team to feel comfortable making their own calls and decisions at pace.”

An exciting future

As a final note, Mark left us with some exciting comments about the future of the business and the opportunities at hand in his geographic region.

“In the UK, we’re still growing in size, but that doesn’t impact what we’re already able to accomplish. If I’m here in 10 years, I often wonder – what could that 10 years look like?”

Mark concludes, “If we continue to grow, upscale and improve, we could be twice the size we are now and our role in the market with retailers could be significantly different. That’s what inspires me to build for the future.”

In her position, April handles the entire Church & Dwight portfolio for Rite Aid, which includes managing a broker and assisting with the day-to-day sales operations of the customer.

April will be celebrating 10 years with the business in January 2022, which is a significant milestone in her career at Church & Dwight.

In her own words, “What surprised me most about Church & Dwight is the longevity of the employees. It totally feels like a family, which is very refreshing. Working here just feels good.”

The people are what make Church & Dwight a special place

Many organizations like to talk about their culture, but at Church & Dwight, we do feel like we’re onto something pretty special. 

We asked April what she would miss most if she left the business tomorrow. Her answer says it all – “The people, undoubtedly. It’s the overall camaraderie of the organization. I’ve been with my team since day one, and it’s full of some major, witty personalities. I would really, really miss the people here.”

At Church & Dwight, we all work together as one team to succeed, which means going above and beyond what’s expected of us in pursuit of our common goals.

When asked how our people contribute, work together and share ideas, April enthusiastically answered, “This happens all the time. I have what are called line reviews, which are essentially new item presentations for different categories throughout the year. It requires the collective effort of field sales, category sales and category management teams.”

“On one of my family planning reviews,” she continues, “my colleague went above and beyond to help me, to the point where we were in the office late at night. He wanted to help me get the presentation just right – and it ended up going exceptionally well.”

This story exemplifies our team-first attitude, where people set their egos aside to help others succeed. We see this camaraderie across the business from the plants, corporate offices, and locations around the globe, and it’s just one of the reasons why working here is so rewarding.

When we achieve together, anything is possible

“My role can be stressful, and it sometimes requires some very late nights and weekends hard at work, but this ebbs and flows,” says April.“There are times when I can take a deep breath, enjoy the job and move at a normal pace. I do think it takes a special person with certain attributes to manage this type of role. As a salesperson, though, I know this is what I’m meant to do.”

While some of our competitors may have a greater number of employees, we don’t let that stop us from going head-to-head with them (and often coming out on top!). 

“In previous roles, I worked at very large companies where I felt like a small fish in a big pond. At Church & Dwight, there’s more accountability in terms of what I can contribute to the company. The pond is a lot smaller, and I feel like a bigger fish.”

As April notes, we work diligently in a fast-paced environment to solve problems and get things done. We take pride in owning our areas of expertise, and as a result, every one of us can make a tangible impact on the business.

When challenges do arise, we don’t let them get us down. We see these moments as an opportunity to deliver – for our colleagues, customers and consumers alike.

“One of the biggest challenges I face is customer demands which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. That’s been a constant challenge to solve because the customer still needs the product on the shelves. My immediate supervisor is usually very helpful in getting around situations like this.”

Working as a national account manager at Church & Dwight also requires a strong degree of flexibility and agility. As April says, “There are times when the customer may unexpectedly discontinue SKUs. We have to pivot, think outside the box and find a solution that will work.”

Today we spoke with Max L., a Packaging Engineer who works in Foshan, China, as part of our growing international network in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Max has been with the company for nearly 10 years and is responsible for developing packaging and supporting new product launches for several of our brands, including Trojan™️ and Arm & Hammer™️.

His work has helped accelerate our growth in Asia, and he regularly maintains contact with our manufacturers to ensure the smooth release of products and to support cost-saving projects.

The power of the Church & Dwight brand

We asked Max what initially attracted him to join Church & Dwight, to which he responded, “The first thing that attracted me was the power of the brand.”

Church & Dwight has internationally recognizable brands, and the strength of our network extends far beyond the shores of North America. This also affords our people with the opportunity to travel overseas (COVID-permitting, of course).

“In the past 10 years, I’ve traveled to many different manufacturing plants in China. In 2018, we opened a new manufacturing plant in South Korea, so I was able to travel there a lot to work on packaging development. On top of that, I have been able to visit the US R&D headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, and in 2019 I was even able to visit Church & Dwight’s UK office.”

For Max, the heritage of our brand and the connections we have to different locations and global markets has enabled him to travel around the world and visit different business units.

“I love to travel, experience different cultures and see different things,” Max concludes.

The autonomy to solve challenges

For Max, work can be challenging, but he relishes the fact that he can face this head-on and find ways to get the job done.

“When the APAC team places orders for products, we need to create the product spec and the packaging spec in our system in advance, otherwise they cannot trace the order through the SAP. In one instance, we had six different products that needed to be created in two weeks. It was a huge workload and very challenging,” says Max.

Sometimes the workload at Church & Dwight can be demanding, but it gives us a great sense of satisfaction when we use our experience and expertise to reach the finish line.

As Max notes, “I worked day and night for two weeks to get the spec completed, which would allow the APAC team to trace orders correctly. When I had solved the challenge and gotten all of this done, the APAC team was very grateful for what I did.”

See the impact of your work

Before joining Church & Dwight, Max worked on toys, shoes, and gift sets, which he says was a “different experience” than working on consumer products that can actually be seen in shops and stores on a daily basis.

In the past 10 years, Max has been able to “develop carton packaging, bottle packaging and so much more. It’s really enriched my packaging know-how and I’m able to develop many different types of packaging for the company now.”

Our products are household staples around the world, which means it’s quite inspiring to see how your work can directly impact people. 

Max comments on this, saying, “When my wife gave birth to my second son, I spent a lot of time in the hospital. During that time, I saw many women using our products. That was very inspiring.”

Today we spoke with Chris C., a Logistics Manager in the finished goods distribution team at our plant in Harrisonville, Missouri.

Chris joined the business as a Hiring Our Heroes Fellow and then full-time in December 2020 after a distinguished 23-year career in the military. Chris’ experience with the US Army has enabled him to seamlessly transition into his role at Church & Dwight, where he is  responsible for managing over 120 salaried, full-time hourly and temporary employees.

Chris uses his training and leadership skills to manage all aspects of our distribution operation – from the delivery of raw materials to production lines through to the storage, loading and shipping of bulk finished goods, both domestically and internationally.

A brand that has stood the test of time

After more than two decades in the military, Chris knew he wanted to move into the private sector but didn’t want to settle at any business – he specifically wanted to work for a company with a strong past and an exciting future.

“The first thing that attracted me was the name and the brand,” notes Chris. “Church & Dwight is a company that has existed and been successful for 175 years, with no signs of slowing down.”

With a history that spans nearly two centuries, we’re all proud to work for a company that has stood the test of time and continues to innovate, adapt and grow. This was a big selling point in Chris’ decision to join the business.

“Church & Dwight brands are instantly recognizable. It’s one of those things that jumps at you, and I wanted to work for a company that was established and here to stay,” notes Chris.

From the military to management – in the middle of a pandemic

Chris began working with us at the height of the pandemic, which is no easy feat for anyone, let alone someone moving into their first private sector role in their career.

“I became employed by Church & Dwight in the middle of the pandemic, but one thing that stood out to me was the brand. It didn’t suffer – it kept going.”

Chris was always attracted to supply chain management, but naturally had some doubts about how his experience in the US Army would carry over into the manufacturing and consumer goods space.

“To be honest, I wasn’t sure this late in the game, having been in the army for over two decades, whether I would be able to enter the industry and be successful.”

No surprise to anyone, Chris has excelled in his role. He is responsible for managing case pick, bulk loading, receiving, inventory control and order management for multiple varieties of Arm & Hammer™️ and OxiClean™️ detergents, working across two facilities that encompass a total of 695,000 square feet and over 38,000 pallet positions.

Chris attributes much of his success to his background in the military, adding, “My leadership training in the military, alongside my knowledge and skills of how to manage people and develop and improve processes, has helped me be successful at Church & Dwight.”

A culture of personal responsibility, accountability, and trust

Chris adds, “I really appreciate that from him. I’m not sure whether that happens in other organizations, but that’s something that definitely stands out.”

As Chris continues to learn and grow in his role, the plant manager increasingly relies on him to make informed decisions.

Chris poignantly concludes, “I’m humbled by the fact that the plant manager has given me the responsibility and trust to make that decision.”

We spoke with Kristen R., who works in Plant Operations. Kristen is also one of our newer employees, having only been with us for a year, but what a year it’s been!

Her main responsibilities are the scheduling of our lines, including baking soda and cat deodorizer, and she makes sure we get everything we need to get our products off the production line and onto our customers’ shelves. It’s fast-paced, with real responsibility and job satisfaction.

Better work-life balance

Kristen’s arrival to the C&D team came after a decision to leave her prior industry after 35 years.

Since making the leap to vastly improve her work-life balance, we asked Kristen what surprised her the most when she joined us.

“The people here are laid back. It's so much different than the other industry I worked in, and so friendly and patient. I worked in another industry for 35 years, and it was demanding, you get called on holidays, weekends, after hours throughout the night. And that's not what I wanted. Joining Church & Dwight is the best decision I've ever made.”

We then spoke about what things she’d miss about working at C&D if she had to leave tomorrow. The answer was unsurprising, as it now seems like a common answer to this question when we asked other team members across the country.

“Well, definitely the people. I love the people I work with. They're so friendly and so helpful and even though it's only been a year, they're like my  family. I love the job. I love what I do. I can make a difference here.”

Listened to and empowered

Kristen’s colleagues are clearly very important to her, so we asked her if it was like that across the board, if she felt she was given the autonomy and authority to carry out her duties and if her decisions were respected when it came to solving any challenges that she may have faced. We were pleased to get an enthusiastic and positive response.

“People here listen. I’ve changed a couple of things; everyone has their own scheduling style and so I changed from what the previous person did, and everyone was ok with it.”

Kristen is also a big fan of the level of teamwork that is present within the ranks of C&D and the support network that is omnipresent whenever and whoever needs it, with everyone at every level willing to help out to get the job done and to be there for each other when it matters most.

At C&D, our team members are just that, members of a team and we think, quite rightly, that from time to time everyone should get a pat on the back or a simple thank you just to let them know we appreciate them. This was something that Kristen couldn’t quite believe.

“We have monthly giveaways where we are constantly getting something from the company, and during this pandemic, the bonuses they’d give us were just amazing.”

It became apparent from our conversation that Kristen had really made the best decision for herself and her family when joining us at C&D and for that we say thank you to her. We’re as glad as she is that she made the career change.

We spoke to Scot D., who works in our Speciality Products Division. If anyone knows the C&D business inside and out, it’s Scot, as he has been an asset of our company for an amazing 33 years.

Scot’s division is responsible for the bagging and shipping of materials to our customers.

Scot is in charge of making sure that around 2600 pounds of product is distributed on time and to the correct destination. It requires a real attention to detail and skill with logistics to make sure all our customers get exactly what they need, exactly when they need it.

Seeing growth happen

Scot has worked for Church & Dwight for three decades, so it’s only fair to assume that he has seen a lot of changes in that time. The most obvious change to Scot was the growth of the company,

“When I started out, we had a couple of plants here and there, and then over the years it’s just grown and grown, we’ve gone global!”

Loyalty rewarded

We asked Scot what he would miss if he left the team at C&D after all that time. His reply was short and sweet and came as no surprise.

“The people.”

Another positive thing that Scot had to say about the company was the loyalty they have shown him as one of their longest serving employees.

“I’ve always had a job, through thick and thin. There was a period of my life when I was ill and had to have some treatment every day. The company took care of me and together we made sure I was able to continue to work as well as deal with my condition.”

We are one big team at C&D, across all levels, and we value every single member of that team and offer them all the support they need, ensuring that their time with us, from one year to 33 years, is a happy one.

Teamwork and development

After 33 years of service, we asked Scot what he has learned about himself.

“I can work well with others; I’m willing to let people learn by themselves but I’m also happy to offer advice if anyone asks for it.”

Scot went on to tell us that, even though he’s worked for such a long time he still doesn’t know everything.

“You can always learn more, computers, electronics, things from other people. I’ve realized that sometimes I have to step back and think, ‘Ok yeah, let me learn from them.”

With over three decades of service, it was refreshing to hear that Scot still has an appetite to keep learning and developing. We do all we can to make sure all our team members are supported at every stage of their career.

We caught up with Jacob W., who has been part of the C&D team for nine and a half years. Jacob is one of our packaging supervisors who oversees six production lines that produce Arm & Hammer baking soda, carpet cleaner and three cat litter production lines. It’s fair to say that Jacob is a busy man, but it’s the pace and responsibility of the work that many of our team members enjoy the most.

A great reputation

We asked Jacob what first attracted him to a career at C&D.

"I had a friend working here at the time, and he said it was a great place and they treat people well. I know that’s a similar story for a lot of people, C&D has a good reputation among their staff, and they tell their friends that they should look into coming to Church & Dwight for a career."

High praise indeed and there’s nothing better than a word-of-mouth recommendation from a friend about a potential employer, a reputation that we are very proud of.

Collaboration at every level

One thing that surprised Jacob, when he first joined us, was the hands-on mentality of everybody that works here.

"I remember seeing some of the upper management willing to help out and do things, which surprised me. I was impressed by that. I thought that if they were willing to do those things then I’d be happy to do them as well."

None of us are afraid of a little hard work at C&D, and the culture here is something that’s very important to us as well. We like to think that every one of our team members is treated fairly, with respect and feel they can have a voice which will always be heard, something that Jacob would miss if he were ever to leave us.

"I think everyone is fairly approachable and not every organization is that way, I’d definitely miss that."

Teamwork also plays a big part in the day-to-day running of our production lines, ensuring everything runs as smooth as clockwork on our factory floors. Jacob remembers a time when everyone came together on a specific initiative.

"We had a project that involved installing dock locks that help make the trailers more secure during the loading process. We were able to work with our management and corporate teams to get a resolution. I think that worked well for everybody to get a safer end result."

Support and encouragement

We are a team at C&D, a team where the support is there if you need it along with a few words of encouragement and the occasional pat on the back. We like to offer opportunities to all our employees and if they’re up for the challenge we’ll be there to help them succeed.

The last year has been one of the toughest we’ve all had to face, and we made sure we were there for all our colleagues to help them through it. Our support certainly paid off with everyone stepping up to help each other out when team numbers were low or just getting involved to make sure production kept running as normally as possible. For that, we couldn’t be prouder.
