Employee Stories

Since 1846 we’ve been committed to providing products consumers can count on - for now and for years to come - all around the world. Our power brands such as Arm & Hammer™️, Xtra™️ and Waterpik®️ are household names, relied upon by millions of customers. As we’ve grown, we’ve been sure to build our culture around the tenants of courage, determination and team spirit. We’re united by our small company feel and inspired by opportunities to make our mark.

But what’s it like to really work for Church & Dwight? How does it feel to see the direct impact of your work and be right at the heart of the action, in the thick of things, making our company tick?

In this blog series, we interviewed key players in our business to uncover what they do, where they operate and why they enjoy coming to work every day. Each of these employees adds tremendous value to Church & Dwight.

Today we spoke with Billy W., who’s one of our highly skilled production mechanics.

The opportunity to advance and make an impact

Billy has been with us for just over 8 months now, long enough to know the ropes, but also new enough to remember the process that got him here. As a production mechanic at our Colonial Heights facility, Billy, with his team, ensures that all our machinery runs perfectly. As you can imagine, that’s quite a responsibility.

As Billy tells us, “My role is to troubleshoot and repair equipment in the plant as and when necessary, to make sure that we make production and get things done.”

When you think of all the products we make at any one of our facilities, it would be hard to imagine how he and his team of production mechanics wouldn’t make an impact. Billy agrees, but adds, “My job is to work in the background, to make sure everything runs smoothly with the equipment, but the great team we have here has always done that, long before I arrived.”

But even in his short time with us, Billy has certainly made an impact with his team. “I was approached by my supervisor last week about doing the Train the Trainer Course, to learn to be a leader and teacher for future mechanics. And that makes me feel good about myself and shows that my hard work has paid off and is seen, so yes, I guess I have made an impact in the time I’ve been here.”

We believe in providing all our colleagues with the opportunity to upskill, and Billy hasn’t wasted any time in taking up the programs offered.

“Church & Dwight has been kind enough to offer the Lead Practitioner Course,” says Billy. “And anything else to help further my value to the company, as well as my own value for myself. I’m looking forward to all advancement opportunities.”

Our people-first policy makes a difference

Billy’s ambitious, and that’s exactly what we like to see at Church & Dwight. And that’s one of the things that attracted him to the company, the opportunity for advancement.

“I left a job that I'd been at for 15 years because there was no further advancement,” says Billy. “I did my interview with the maintenance supervisor and the engineering supervisor here, and they were very honest and told me there were lots of opportunities for me. It’s something they were very keen to make me aware of, and I certainly appreciated it.”

As we all know, taking a new job is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make in your life; especially when coming from somewhere you’ve been for so long. And even if we do offer advancement opportunities, excellent compensation and a generous 401k, there are still other things you need to consider.

“The vibe was really good. Along with everything else I’ve spoken about, I really liked the vibe I got from everybody. Everybody was very open and honest about the company and the work involved,” says Billy. “I got a tour of the facility, I was impressed, and it all looked good. It looked like something I would enjoy doing. And I made up my mind and took the job there and then.”

This “vibe” is something we’ve nurtured over the years. We pride ourselves on our people-first culture, throughout the company. And this culture permeates the business; working all the way through our supply chain; from our wholesalers, retailers and finally to our customers. We believe in building honest, friendly and long-lasting relationships. And when you’ve been around for over 175 years, we think we've earned the right to say we're pretty good at it.

As Billy says, “Like everybody here, from upper management, down to floor level operators, everybody is helpful and forthright and nice. It's been a wonderful experience coming here. It’s great!”

We’re a forward-thinking organization

While we celebrate our heritage, we’re constantly looking to move forward. Making our products the best they can be and getting them to our consumers takes the latest technology and best equipment, at every level.

Billy can attest to the fact, “Church & Dwight is adapting to change and implementing new technologies and better equipment all the time. Which is great for me, because I get to work with the best machines and get trained to do so, and in turn, I can train others.”

The rewards of working for Church & Dwight are many, but it takes a certain attitude to work here, and it’s one everyone shares. As Billy tells us, “Be positive, be open to learning. I always strive to be the best value for my employer, be that working overtime, not slacking and getting the job done in a timely and thorough manner.”

That’s excellent advice. Luckily for us, Billy’s industrious and energetic outlook on every aspect of his work is paying off for him, and us.
