Lab Manager - Microbiology (Animal & Food Production)

Position Overview

  • Support natural microbial solutions for the animal productivity product lines for the Arm and Hammer Animal and Food Production business.  

  • Manage scientists responsible for microbial and molecular analysis of environmental and animal samples from livestock customer to customize targeted microbial solutions.  

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the laboratory and provide overall direction and assistance to laboratory personnel.  

  • Ensure proper sample handling and deliver accurate and timely reports to sales and technical team as part of the customer support platform.  

  • Responsible for all laboratory assays and data analysis to generate customer reports.  

  • Responsible for instrument maintenance.  

  • Maintain inventory to meet operational needs.  

  • Ensure scientists are well trained in established SOPS for customer support platform assays.  

  • Coordinate customer analytical requirements between field and laboratory teams. 

  • Liaise with research scientists to implement new assays to develop the customer support platform.  

  • Keep current on trends in the marketplace, with the competition, and in the organization. 

  • Collaborate with R&D in product development projects for new targeted microbial solutions and other feed and environmental additives for livestock.  

  • Evaluate, analyze, and summarize information for research reports, technical bulletins and presentations at customer meetings and scientific conferences  

  • Knowledge of livestock production or animal health industry. 

Education and Experience 

  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. degree and 6+ years of experience in microbiology or B.Sc. and 9+ years of experience in microbiology.  

  • Minimum of three years management experience in a laboratory.  

General Skills 

  • Demonstrated organizational and management skills.  

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills.  

  • Advanced scientific knowledge and hands on laboratory skills needed including general microbiology and molecular biology techniques. 

  • Ability to work independently and consistently demonstrate initiative to quickly become productive when assigned new projects and provide timely high-quality data 

General Laboratory Requirements 

  • Adhere to and follow established procedures and policies for working in the laboratory designated for the development of regulated products 

  • Maintain a log of all samples, isolates and experimental results in a laboratory notebook or other data capture software system. 

  • Computer literate and knowledgeable and proficient in MS office.
