Position Overview:         Operations Supervisor – Iowa SPD Plant

Job Summary:

This position will oversee the assurance of cost-effective and efficient manufacturing processes.   The focus is on the supervision of production, packaging, and warehouse operations at an Iowa SPD manufacturing location.  This position is responsible for scheduling the production of and maintaining proper inventories of finished goods, ordering and maintaining inventory of raw materials, and ensuring that production is completed on time.

This position will be required to provide production operator training and back-up support, assisting in the operation and control of all phases of the production process. These duties include all daily operations from the receiving of raw materials to the load-out of finished goods. This position will require working knowledge of and operation of all production equipment, packaging equipment, and warehousing operations.  All Good Manufacturing Practices and Standard Operating Procedures will be followed.



  • Perform safety training, environmental training, and new hire training as needed.
  • Support the efforts to standardize and maintain equipment safety guidelines per OSHA regulations.
  • Be a leader in the effort to keep all work areas clean, neat, and free from safety hazards following the plant’s 5S and Housekeeping SOP.

Feed Safety

  • Per the Safe Feed/Safe Food SOP, this position is a part of the Feed Safety Team and shall adhere to the requirements of the position as outlined in that SOP.
  • Understands and adheres to all written processes related to manufacturing.
  • Understands and adheres to all processes related to feed safety requirements and demonstrates a commitment to feed safety by ensuring compliance to regulatory requirements.


  • Ability to perform and train on all production related responsibilities including: receiving, shipping, line operation, parameter adjustment, lab testing, packaging, bulk loadout, mixing, fermentation, and inventory management.
  • Oversee that the manufacturing, packaging, receiving, and shipment process as performed within SOP’s.
  • Establish workloads and schedules based on changing production plans.
  • Ensure production and packaging requirements are completed as specified and scheduled, with a target of greater than 98% Attainment.
  • Monitor finished goods inventories, and maintain proper raw material supplies.
  • Monitor production, sampling and changeover efficiencies; identify and implement ways to improve them.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance activities with Maintenance Planner/Scheduler
  • Ensure that employees are fully trained, following SOP’s.
  • Manage the timely approval of hourly payroll records.
  • Ensure plant safety through safe working practices and participation on the Plant Safety Committee.
  • Evaluate department employees and work with Human Resources to manage employee performance.
  • Fulfill on-call duties as needed.
  • Act as back-up on the production floor as needed.
  • Develop and present periodic training to large groups as assigned.
  • Assist in the implementation of capital projects & process improvements.
  • Participate as a member on the plant Feed Safety Team.
  • Assist in driving processes and team members towards achieving 100% adherence to all product quality, HACCP requirements, and registration guidelines.

Project Management / Continuous Improvement

  • Assist in implementing new equipment, facilities, office, and process projects.
  • Responsible for hiring Production Technicians.
  • Drive and sustain C&D’s Lean Management System.
  • Hold Tier 2 daily meetings. Fill in as needed for the Tier 0/1 and Tier 3 meetings.
  • Write and submit Capital Expenditure Requests (CER’s) under direction of a supervisor.
  • Provide accurate and thorough documentation and records of all projects and duties.
  • Assist with physical installations of equipment.
  • Develop, write, and assist with implementing standard work, work instruction, and SOP’s.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing process improvements in all aspects of the facility.
  • Lead internal, customer, and certification audits at the facility.
  • Support the efforts on Kaizen and other Continuous Improvement initiatives.


  • Follow all facility rules to maintain quality and integrity of both raw materials and finished products.  Set the example to follow.
  • Back-up support for the Plant Manager and counter-part Operations Supervisor
  • Travel as needed for business needs throughout the year.
  • Be an effort-demonstrated, motivated, positive, and encouraging leader of the team.


  • Four year degree in or equivalent relevant competencies.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful management experience.
  • Strong computer literacy and accuracy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SAP is a plus).

Special Skills / Competencies / Requirements:

  • Able to operate industrial feed production equipment.
  • Ability to climb silos, grain bins, and grain elevators.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Attentive to organization, detail and accuracy.
  • Proven track record with positive employee relations.
  • Understands all processes related to animal food safety requirements.
