Department:                          R&D Product Stewardship & Sustainability

Reports To:                            Director, Global Product Stewardship & Sustainability

Role Summary                                                          

Drives environmental, safety and chemical hygiene program to maintain compliance with the various federal and state environmental, safety and Department of Transportation regulations and Corporate requirements.  Coordinates all safety, health and environmental program elements as related to the Research & Development operations. Manages the Global Safety Data Sheet program.

Role Accountabilities and Responsibilities 

  • Oversees the R&D safety and chemical hygiene programs together with the Global Product Stewardship & Sustainability Director.  Seeks continuous improvement of these programs.  Develops and updates safety-related policies and procedures as the need arises. Monitors the effectiveness of the R&D Safety Program through periodic site inspections, audits, and analysis of injury/illness rates.

  • Serves as the resource person and communicator for environmental, safety and health information for all R&D employees. Serves as the chair of the Princeton Safety Committee. Maintains thorough knowledge of regulations and interprets standards, codes and regulations issued by various governing bodies. Monitors employee safe behavior and coaches, reinforces, and corrects as appropriate.

  • Develops and implements environmental, safety and health training based upon regulatory requirements, corporate requirements, and the specific safety hazards associated with employees’ jobs. Ensures the safety training of contingency workers/contractors and the safety orientation of new employees. Serves as the safety training coordinator for the Learning Management Program, ensuring training compliance by employees.

  • Serves as the liaison with the Corporate Environmental & Safety Operations Department for Princeton area R&D activities and incidents. Provides timely reporting of incidents and near misses, completes Root Cause Analyses and Incident Investigations, and manages recordkeeping of work-related injuries and illnesses. Tracks the status of corrective actions to close Audit findings and safety inspection observances.  Ensures site safety policies and procedures meet Corporate safety requirements at a minimum.

  • Manages the Global Safety Data Sheet (SDS) authoring program.  Oversees the technical review of finished product SDS. Ensures that finished product SDS are publicly accessible and accurate and have been contemporized to the latest global standards. Oversees the submittal of SDS Authoring Request Packages globally to ensure that required formulation and raw material ingredient documentation is provided. Coordinates SDS delivery dates to meet timelines for product registration and launch. Manages the translations of SDS’s to meet global regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures the electronic retention and accessibility of finished product SDS internally and in the public domain. Ensures that SDS for all chemicals handled in Princeton R&D laboratories and pilot plants are retained and accessible to employees.  Oversees the R&D chemical inventory management system

  • Provides as-needed support for both product stewardship and corporate sustainability functions, particularly related to chemical policy/reporting and customer requests/support for both consumer and SPD areas.

Education and Experience                                                          

BA/BS from an accredited institution in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related sciences

Minimum 5 years of applicable experience

Skills and Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state and local requirements

  • Broad understanding of technical areas and regulatory agencies

  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to develop, organize and prioritize tasks and work

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
