Job Title:         Food Safety Sanitization Supervisor – VMS (Vitamin and Mineral Supplements)

Department:   VMS (Vitamin and Mineral Supplements) Operations

General Summary:

The Food Safety Sanitation Supervisor must possess strong leadership and team building skills along with a background and technical aptitude as it relates to food safety, maintenance practices, and sanitation programs in a cGMP manufacturing facility. This role will develop, implement, and maintain maintenance and sanitation program policies, plans and processes required to comply with regulatory and company standards

Essential Functions:

  • Help to develop, implement, and sustain maintenance/sanitation programs, policies, plans and processes that meet or exceed sanitary performance and food safety requirements specified in dietary supplement food manufacturing regulations
  • Manage and audit the Master Cleaning Schedule and SSOP’s to ensure compliance with food safety/hygienic manufacturing practices
  • Directly/Indirectly supervise personnel such that equipment maintenance/sanitation procedures and environmental cleaning is completed in a timely manner, as well as maintain detailed records of all sanitation related activities and issues.
  • Carry out Supervisor responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies and applicable laws including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Continuously promote safety within the company ensuring all tasks are completed in a safe manner while looking for opportunities for improvement.
  • Monitor plant and equipment conditions to ensure no adverse effect on product quality. Resolve / communicate any areas of concern associated with sanitation completeness and food safety.
  • Identify/implement strategies that effectively lower controllable costs of sanitation labor, operating supplies, and cleaning chemicals while driving continuous improvement in sanitation and food safety.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Operations to troubleshoot and analyze HACCP, food safety, and sanitization-related issues.
  • Engage technical experts from corporate, industry and chemical/equipment suppliers to troubleshoot any food safety and sanitation challenges.  Identify novel technologies and methodologies that improve cleaning effectiveness and reduce food safety risks.
  • Solicit recommendations from hourly and salaried plant resources for improved food safety and sanitation efficacy.
  • Manage site-wide Pest Control program including vendors and associated activities.
  • Ensures safety requirements related to maintenance/sanitation tasks are met including chemical concentration and storage, Material Safety Data Sheets, PPE, and procedures.
  • Oversee Sanitation cost center and budget.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A minimal of 1 to 3 years of supervision experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to build positive relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent communications skills – ability to communicate clearly and concisely in multiple media – verbal, written, etc.
  • Excellent organizational/time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments in a fast-paced work environment, calm under pressure and flexibility to adapt to changing schedules as appropriate.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office Suite, SAP).
  • In-depth knowledge of appropriate wet cleaning and dry-cleaning methodology.  Able to identify the appropriate cleaning method and can synthesize knowledge to evaluate situations and make effective recommendations based on scientific principles.
  • Experience in successfully addressing environmental sanitation challenges in areas such as drains, floors, walls, roofs and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with diverse sanitizing applications.
  • Competence in Total Quality Systems (ISO-9000, ISO-22000), cGMP and regulatory requirements (21 CFR 110, 111, 210/211 and USP Dietary Supplement GMP requirements).


  • Bachelor’s Degree in sanitation-related field (Operations Management, Maintenance, Engineering, Chemistry, Quality, Food Science, etc.) required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years maintenance and/or sanitation experience in a food/pharmaceutical processing/manufacturing environment (preferably dietary supplements).
  • Sanitarian and Pesticide Application Certifications a plus.
