POSITION SUMMARY

Position Title:      Senior Packaging Engineer (Sustainability)

Company:            Church and Dwight

Department:         R&D, Global Packaging Development

Reports to:           Packaging Innovation & Sustainability Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The individual will lead packaging sustainability development programs aligned to the corporate sustainability pillars, working closely with internal teams and external suppliers and projects from initiation through manufacturing feasibility. Projects will consist of modifications of packaging for existing products as well as the packaging for new products. 

Additional scope includes consideration of new, exploratory platforms for next-generational package design and materials selection.

The role has responsibility for collation and reporting out on corporate metrics for sustainability, on material recyclability, use of post-consumer recycled content, and setting the targets and programs to drive programs forward

The individual will be supporting the department in cross-functional SBU (Strategic Business Unit) teams.  The individual will need to find solutions to problems, manage multiple priorities and expectations, and deliver to those expectations.

Coordination of sustainability qualification programs for new designs and materials to assess feasibility and impact potential

Be a key member in building new IT tracking tools to improve and expand on domestic and global reporting for corporate and customer sustainability targets.

Work alongside our International teams to drive programs to lower environmental impact solutions

Work with Marketing and R&D Innovation teams to assess Lifecycle Analysis impact and support the drive to sustainable future packaging formats.

The individual will have accountability to Strategic Business Units (SBU areas) for packaging sustainability development and support.  Project deliverables need to assure that quality and consumer expectations are met while maintaining project schedule.

Liaison with sustainability organizations, representing company, helping to drive approaches for corporate sustainability

To maintain awareness of both domestic and international legislation changes affecting materials compliance  

In addition to working within cross-functional teams, the individual will also work closely with quality, finance, procurement, regulatory, engineering, operations, consultants and outside vendors.

Senior Packaging Engineer role may include management of Packaging Technicians or Packaging Engineers

POSITION ACTIVITIES

  • Packaging development with various materials:  fiberboard, corrugated, plastics, films
  • Execute projects with complete scope from primary through tertiary packaging development
  • Generation and execution of test plans and reports
  • Provide expertise and support to the packaging team in assessment of material recyclability status, in line with the APR and H2R guidelines and standards, and work with independent laboratories or facilities to test materials for recyclability.
  • Compilation of sustainability reports and liaison with Corporate Sustainability Stewardship for key customers and Non-Government Organizations on our sustainability scorecards
  • Creation and driving of project timelines and build of roadmaps targeting progress against goals
  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new package designs and materials
  •  Assess and recommend feasibility of new technologies or materials to improve our sustainability footprint.
  • Travel to vendor and manufacturing locations for support of packaging project activities
  • Hands-on evaluation of packaging for conformance to project requirements.  These activities can occur in warehouses and in packaging laboratory studies
  • Supervision of Packaging Technicians or Packaging Engineers in the delivery of SBU projects
  • Communication of sustainability initiatives from around the world and notable competitive activity to the R&D community through our Green Newsletter initiative.
  • Generation of new sustainable ideas and development of sustainable concepts to proof of principle through the R&D Futureworks program.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in package development, device or hard goods manufacturing.  A preference will be towards candidates that have experience in “consumer goods” packaging areas

The candidate should have a minimum of a BS degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering sciences.

The candidate’s experience must clearly demonstrate experience in many of the following areas:

  • Experience in primary through tertiary packaging development for new product launches
  • Management of projects and project teams towards commercialization of new products.
  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new package designs and materials
  • Understanding of the essentials of sustainability, and a solid background of the latest technologies in sustainability, guidelines and policies for packaging recyclability and awareness of NGO’s driving industry change.
  • Understanding of LCA metrics, sustainability metrics and reporting
  • Fully developed skills in project management and experienced, cross-functional interactions
  • Understanding of SPC and DOE (design of experiments) and development of component specifications
  • Experience in FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis)
  • Experience across an array of packaging materials / converting methods:
  • Corrugated containers
  • Folding cartons (solid fiberboard)
  • Plastic bottles and injection molded components
  • Flexible film

OTHER SKILLS NEEDED

  • Clear ability to organize and prioritize a number of Packaging projects
  • Effective leadership and supervisory skills
  • High interpersonal skills to influence partner functions within project team environment
  • Strong communication and presentation skills across the organization at multiple levels
  • A self-motivated and proactive personality with ambitions to “learn and deliver” within a fast paced,  “employee empowered” atmosphere
  • Passion for sustainability and environmental impact.
  • High competency in Microsoft applications and general computer usage.
