Job Title:        Transportation Specialist

Department:  Canadian Supply Chain                  

Role Summary                                                          

The primary purpose of this role is to manage the Canadian transportation providers to meet the quality, on time delivery and cost objectives of C&D in Canada.  This role will be a blend of daily operational tasks, freight analysis and assistance with carrier rate negotiations.   Scope is inbound and outbound for all modes with a total carrier spend of $28 million.

Role Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Provide day to day operational management of the transportation providers for Canada by tendering loads using the TMS, proactively managing carrier on time delivery and dealing with exceptions such as expedites and mode changes.  Scope is inbound, outbound for all mode types.  Anticipate this to be 50% of the work. Be the primary carrier relationship manager to ensure they are aware of their performance and actively work improvement strategies to meet C&D needs. Analysis of freight flows to identify and implement a variety of freight G2G cost reduction strategies by collaborating with various departments including sales, marketing, carrier partners, warehousing and customer logistics. Identify systemic carrier performance issues and proactively act to improve using the Kaizen approach to make process change between the carrier and C&D Play a key role in carrier rate negotiations as part of the negotiation team by analyzing bids, providing insight into incumbent performance, being a source of knowledge of the Canadian transportation market and leading the carrier on boarding process.  Ensure the Canadian transportation partners have sufficient capacity to meet C&D needs. Primary liaison with Customer Logistics and distribution centers/plants to identify and correct transportation service issues. Transportation leader for compliance fines – responsible for identifying trends and reducing fines through corrective action. Participate in leading edge transportation collaboration and benchmarking activities with other shippers, carriers, or vendors.

Education and Experience                                                          

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics or Transportation
  • College diploma with extensive experience would be considered
  • CITT designation would be an asset
  • 5-7 years of experience in a logistics or transportation environment
  • TMS experience a must have skill.  Blue jay TMS preferred
  • Knowledge of SAP and WMS systems an advantage
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of products
  • Experience with power BI would be an asset
  • Knowledge of the Canadian transportation market and dynamics including TL, LTL, cross border and intermodal
  • Experience with regulated products and the requirements for heat and cooling

Skills and Competencies

  • Candidate must possess the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Demonstrated expertise in functional areas
  • Knowledge of lean and six sigma preferred
  • Outstanding analytical capability with proven ability to identify and implement transportation cost and service improvement ideas
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with other functions to identify and implement cost and service improvements
  • The ability to organize and analyze a high volume of data, while managing multiple priorities.
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced environment
